About Deering Estate
Why Visit Deering Estate?
Historic Richmond Cottage: Step back in time at Richmond Cottage, a charming three-story wooden home dating from around 1900. Originally a family residence, then transformed into a 22-room hotel, this building offers visitors a unique glimpse into early 20th-century life in Miami. Its well-preserved architecture and period furnishings tell the story of the Deering family and the area's development during the Florida land boom of the 1920s.
Stone House Mansion: The impressive Stone House stands as a testament to innovative 1920s construction, featuring 18-inch thick concrete walls and oolitic limestone. Notable for its design choices—such as the absence of a stove due to fire concerns—the mansion includes a hidden wine cellar uncovered after Hurricane Andrew. Visitors can explore the grandeur of this three-story residence, which demonstrates both architectural ingenuity and the personal tastes of Charles Deering.
Cutler Burial Mound and Natural Preserve: Explore the Cutler Burial Mound, a prehistoric Native American site accessible via a scenic boardwalk. This area is part of the estate’s rich archaeological heritage and offers insight into early indigenous cultures. Surrounding natural habitats, such as the largest virgin coastal tropical hardwood hammock in the continental U.S., provide opportunities for birdwatching and engaging with ecosystem restoration projects like the Cutler Slough Rehydration.
Scenic Biscayne Bay Views and Water Activities: Deering Estate’s location along Biscayne Bay affords spectacular water vistas and outdoor experiences. Visitors can participate in canoe and kayak tours, including popular moonlight kayaking events, to appreciate the bay’s natural beauty and local wildlife up close. These activities combine recreation with environmental education, making them memorable for nature enthusiasts.
Cultural and Artistic Programs: The estate hosts a variety of cultural events such as contemporary art exhibits, artist residencies, and workshops that engage visitors in Miami’s vibrant artistic community. With indoor and outdoor venues accommodating concerts, theatre performances, and seasonal festivals, guests can enjoy diverse programming that reflects the estate’s role as both a historic site and a dynamic cultural center.
